  Our School

Highland Elementary is a Level 5 school which is a statement to the commitment to teaching and to each student at this school. Highland maintains its Level 5 status because of the dedication of these amazing individuals who work together as a team to ensure that our students are receiving the highest of standards in education. We encourage you to visit the "Overview" pages for each grade level to see what students are currently studying and exploring in the classrooms.

Carpool Procedures
All car riders unload (morning) and load (afternoon) in the circular drive in front of the school.

Morning Carpool
1. Car riders must remain in their car until the 7:00 bell rings.
2. Please drive SLOWLY! Children on the sidewalk are very close to the traffic.
3. Pull as far forward as possible before stopping - as directed by the carpool duty teachers. Only cars that are along the sidewalk when the line stops should unload. STAY OFF THE GRASS PLEASE!
4. It is VERY IMPORTANT to be ready to unload when the line stops. Please help us keep the traffic flowing smoothly by taking care of signed papers, lunch money, etc. before you arrive.
5. Students must unload from the passenger side ONLY.
6. Please be patient and remain in the line. DO NOT PULL OUT OF THE LINE TO PASS OR PARK.
7. Parking spaces in the front lot are for office staff and handicapped only. All other visitors must park in the lower lot North of the building.
8. The tardy bell rings at 7:30. This means that your child should be in their classroom by that time. Any students who arrives as the bell is ringing or after the bell has rung must be accompanied to the office by a parent to be signed in as tardy. The child must have a tardy slip to be admitted to class.

Afternoon Carpool
***Important Note: Dismissal Time is 2:15. Our car rider line will move very quickly! Typically all car riders and day care are gone from campus by 2:20. If you have students at multiple schools, please make accomodations for this.
1. Pull as far forward as possible toward the flag pole as directed by the carpool duty teachers.
2. Children will exit the building and load three cars at a time.
3. DO NOT PULL OUT OF THE LINE TO PASS OR PARK.

Change in Transportation
If your child has a change in their transportation, you must send a written note to their teacher. Otherwise the child will be sent home in the usual way. Any changes after 1:30 cannot be guaranteed.

Teacher Wish List
If you want to make your teacher happy give them a helping hand and purchase a couple of things off of this "wish" list:
* A Gift Card: A gift card from School Aids, Michaels or even Wal-Mart can help your teacher buy those items she needs to supplement her lessons.
* Mavalus Tape: This is the only tape that teachers are allowed to place items up on their walls. This is precious! You can buy a roll for only $2.99 at School Aids.
* Copy Paper: Our teachers were given a box of paper at the beginning of the year to last the ENTIRE YEAR.   This goes quickly and is like gold. Send your teacher a ream of paper!!
* Ticonderoga Pencils!!! How do kids go through so many pencils? And with state testing they seem to need even more!
* Consumnable class supplies: markers, red pens, paper... look at your school supply list and then hit those clearance aisles to buy your teacher some items that you can store for when students inevitably run out.
* Band-Aids and Neosporin. It is so helpful when your teacher has a class supply of band-aids. This prevents your child from missing out on class time if an accidednt happens because they have to run to the office to get a band-aid.
* Lysol and Clorox Wipes. The best way to fight the spread of germs is to keep things as clean as possible. Keep your teacher stocked with Lysol and Clorox Wipes.

School Terminology 101
The education system has a language all its own and to help you work your way through the maze, we offer you the HES Parent's Cliff Notes on School Terminology.

AR (Accelerated Reader) This is the program we use to test reading comprehension in our students. Students pick a book which has a point value assigned to it based on it's reading level. After they finish reading the book they take a test. If they pass the test, they are awarded AR "points". If a student obtains 40 points and has an AR test average of 80% or better in a 9 week period their picture goes on the Highland "Wall of Fame".

Conference - A meeting with a teacher to discuss a students academic progress or other issues.

ESL (English as Second Language) Special classes for students learning English which focuses on the language skills those students are going to need for academic success.

MCT (Mississippi Curriculum Test) The state mandated tests given the first week in May focusing on reading, language and math.

Pathways - The gifted program in the Madison County School system.

PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) Parents and teachers are invited to join this organization which works with our school to ensure that the needs of our students, staff and school are met.

Tardy - It means that it is 7:31 and your child is late for school. Your child must be walked in and signed in on the tardy sheet in the school office.

SpEd - (Special Education) Special instruction for students who are "specially abled". Students are assessed for special needs prior to placement. Parents must attend meetings and sign consent to place before being placed in Special Education.
